Jimmies’ knocked off unbeaten list By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - Experience won the night. With three seniors and a pair of juniors in the starting lineup, visiting LaVille ended Jimtown’s winning streak at three in high school girls basketball on Thursday night (11.13.25). The game was played before a good-sized crowd, even after a late switch in the date. The Lancers’ football squad will be playing Friday for a regional title, necessitating the change. LaVille used its older players to carve out a 37-21 victory in both teams’ opening skirmish in the Indiana Northern State Conference. “I think the key was defense,” said LV coach Nick Amor. “I think we’re starting to figure it out.” The Lancers’ defense forced Jimtown into 17 turnovers, many of which led to easy baskets. Shaunte Williams, the Jimmies’ coach, said, “Our young team is still working on mental preparation and being ready to play from the tip. We need to start with more energy, value the basketball and communicate better on both ends of the floor.” LaVille allowed just four points in the first period and a mere three in the final stanza. The Lancers now are 1-2 (1-0 in the conference), while the Jimmies fall to 3-1 (0-1). “Poor shooting and turnovers determined the game,” Williams said. “We struggled against their pressure and couldn’t contain (Faith) Mejer. LaVille made us pay for our mistakes. “But I was happy for the way our team stayed positive and encouraged each other, even when things weren’t going our way.” Mejer is a senior and returning to the court after missing last season with an injury. She led all scorers with 20 points. Kiera Jackson had a good night for Jimtown, scoring 10. “She was aggressive to the rim and able to get to the free-throw line,” Williams said. “We didn’t convert enough of our opportunities.” Both team struggled in the first half, and it was a 12-12 tie at the intermission, but the Lancers erupted for an 11-2 burst to start the third quarter, and the Jimmies couldn’t recover. Mejer had seven in that sequence. The Girls of Baugo will be back in action Tuesday (11.18.25) against Mishawaka at home. Tip-off will be at 6:30 and Williams said there will be a two-quarter game on the junior vartsity level starting at 6. Scoring: LaVille 8 4 14 11 37 Jimtown 4 8 6 3 21
