Jimmies cruise to big win over SB Career Academy By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - Sometimes all it takes is a little tweaking to get the stream roller in fine fettle. Jimtown’s Jimmies showed vast improvement in defense and shot-selection in the second half Tuesday night (12.2.25) to roll over visiting South Bend Career Academy, 77-44, in high school basketball. A good crowd was on hand for the non-conference contest. Jimtown now is 2-0 in this early season, while it was the opening game for the Trail Blazers. “I was unhappy with our defense in the first half,” said Jimmy Coach Ryan Varga, “and with our shooting. So, we raised those issues at half-time, and they responded well.” SBCA used its quickness in deploying a full-court press against the Jimmies, but it was handled well by the Boys of Baugo. But the visitors were able to score 14 points in each of the first two quarters, so trailed by just 12 at the intermission. "We buckled down in the second half and did what we were supposed to do, holding them to just 16 points in the second half,” Varga said. “I also was happy with our rebounding, especially by our guards.” (The Jimmies won the board contest, 48-36, led by Dom Fey’s eight and seven each by Tre Baldwin, Jackson Woolwine and Zander Whitaker with seven apiece.) Will Spurgeon sparked the Jimmies with 31 points, including 15 in the first period, some of which were created by steals. Fey chipped in with 13 and Whitaker added 11. Davion Mitchell led the Trail Blazers with a dozen. Baugo shot 41 percent from the floor, but just 28 percent beyond the three-point arch. It held SBCA to 33 percent and 24 percent, respectively. Jimtown travels to Culver Military Academy on Saturday for its next game with a 7:30 pm tip-off. Score by quarters: SB Career 14 14 11 5 44 Jimtown 22 18 20 17 77 Officials: Brandon Rogers, Jonathan Hampton, Tim Holmes.
