Jimmies end slide, 33-27, over Triton’s Lady Trojans By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - They saved most of the excitement for the end. Despite a paltry one-point effort in the third period, Jimtown’s Lady Jimmies came roaring back in the final quarter to wrest a hard-fought 33-27 victory over visiting Triton Tuesday night (12.16.25) in girls high school basketball. “I thought we were flat,” explained Coach Shaunte Williams. “I told them to give it all they’ve got and fight back. Put out some energy.” The Gals of Baugo trailed by seven points (23-16) after that disastrous third stanza, but went on a 7-0 spree to start the final quarter: Lily Gaugler hit a lay-in for two, Jordyn Williams followed with a steal and took it coast-to-coast for two more and Kiera Jackson nailed a three-pointer at 5:43 to tie the game (the only trey of the game). The Lady Trojans countered with a pair of lay-ups by Sierra Hawley to give her squad a 27-25 lead, but the Jimmy defense shut them down the rest of the quarter. “Turnovers ruined us,” complained Ashli Fauklkner, the Triton coach. “We weren’t protecting the ball. They wanted it more than we did.” The victory gave Jimtown a 5-8 record and ended a seven-game losing streak. Triton now stands at 4-6, and it was its third straight defeat. This was a non-conference contest, and a small, enthusiastic crowd was on hand. The Jimtown Pep Band provided some zing and the Jimtown Ensemble led in the National Anthem. Rather than singling out any player, Williams said, “It was a total team effort. I thought our defense really stepped up. And we were able to hit our free throws. Triton was aggressive and played together well.” After Triton took its final lead, 27-25, but committed nine turnovers in the final period and 22 for the game; this was the following sequence: Jackson nailed one of two from the charity stripe. (She led all scorers with 12, and Hawley had 10 for Triton.) Kamryn Williams hit a short jumper, followed by two-for-two at the line. Jackson stole the ball and dished it to Gaugler for an easy chip shot. And Lily Steele finished it off with a free throw at :16.6, completing an 8-0 blitz. The Jimmies will travel to NorthWood on Thursday (12.18.25) before taking a Christmas break. The Jimmies also took the two-quarter junior varsity game, 22-15. Score by quarters: Triton 8 5 10 4 27 Jimtown 9 6 1 17 33 Officials: Brendon Turner (Granger), Savon Williams (South Bend), Mark Havard (Mishawaka) of the St. Joseph Valley Officials Assn.
