Jimmies open softball season with victory over Tigers By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - A whole lot of hustle and a pitching gem propelled Jimtown High School to a 5-2 victory Tuesday afternoon (3.24.26) to open the girls softball season. Warsaw’s Tigers were victimized by the Jimmies for a 3-run uprising in the fifth inning that turned the trick. The Gals of Baugo had four hits, one of them a bunt, a walk, and three Warsaw errors. The opening game for both teams was played on a crisp spring day with the temperature in the mid 40s. A good-sized crowd was on hand, longing for hot cocoa or coffee in the concession stand. The visiting Tigers were held in check by the pitching of Claire Carlson, who struck out 13 and gave up just four hits and a pair of walks. The first 11 outs for Warsaw were K’s. “Claire was just great,” said Jimmy Coach Jamie Kerrn, who enters her first year as Jimtown’s head coach. “She was phenomenal. We had some timely hits and hustled well,” she added. “We took advantage of what they gave us.” Carlson said her rise was the best pitch in her arsenal against Warsaw, “and we played well. We’re feeling pretty good.” The Tigers actually drew first blood, putting across a run in the third inning on two hits and a pair of stolen bases. The Jimmies matched that in the fourth when Nora Hochstetler led off with a single to center, went to second on a passed ball, swiped third and came home on another single to center by Kamryn Williams. But a haphazard fifth frame did it for the Jimmies: Abby Williams led off with a single and went to second when Warsaw’s right-fielder muffed the ball. Brooklyn Gillespie scrambled to first to beat out a bunt, and Rylan Polston followed with a single to center. After a fly-out, Hochstetler singled again, scoring pinch-runner Paige Taylor, and the Tigers made two more errors, letting in two more Jimmy runners without a play. Score by innings: Warsaw 001 001 0 - 2 4 4 Jimtown 000 131 X - 5 8 0 Umpires: Gary Morris, Rodney Miller
