Jimmies going full tilt to knock off LaVille By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - Despite an hour-and-a-half storm delay, Jimtown High School’s Jimmies came out swinging Tuesday night to defeat visiting LaVille in softball, 11-1. Tori Swald, a sophomore, went the distance in the circle for the Jimmies, allowing one run on four hits and one walk, striking out a pair. And Layla Winrott, a senior first-baseman for the Gals of Baugo, went two for three at the bat with three runs-batted-in. She knocked in a pair with a high drive over the centerfielder’s head for a double. The Jimmies now stand at 5-2, and this was their opener in the Indiana Northern State Conference. LaVille’s Lancers fall to 3-4 and 0-2. A small crowd was on hand for the contest, and following the rain, was treated to a beautiful sunset. The game was called in the fifth due to the 10-run rule. “Tori was great on the mound, and Layla was great at the plate,” said Jimmies Coach Jamie Kerrn. “We capitalized on our opportunities and had an all-round good game. “We had a few blunders,” she continued, “but I’m proud of the way they worked their way out of their problems.” A key play came in the third inning with the score tied at one. LaVille’s No. 9 batter, Sydney Williams, led off with the lone walk off Swald (1-0) and no outs. Grace McBride followed with a hard-hit line drive. Junior shortstop Lily Gaugler snared the ball and quickly threw to first to double-up Williams. The Jimmies were quite productive in the third and fourth innings, scoring four runs, then five when they batted around. Key hits were by Nora Hochstetler, Winrott, Swald and Claire Carlson (a double). “Jimtown played clean,” said LaVille Coach Garrett McBride. “They put the ball in play and took advantage of their opportunities.” JV won 10-1 in three innings. Score by innings: LaVille 001 00 - 1 4 3 Jimtown 104 51 - 11 9 3 Umpires: Chris Cortier, Stephen Carr.
