Jimmies still in hunt for softball conference crown By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - It was a rainy, dreary night in Baugo. But that never dampened the spirit of Jimtown High School’s softball squad. The Jimmies took advantage of miscues on the part of visiting John Glenn Tuesday night (5.12.26) to put up a 5-spot on the scoreboard en route to an 8-4 victory over the Falcons. A good-sized crowd was on hand with the diminishing temperature in the high 50s and steady rain from the fourth inning on to see the Jimmies claim their seventh triumph in eight outings to remain tied for the lead in the Indiana Northern State Conference. The title most likely will be decided when Knox comes calling Thursday. The Redskins also have just one loss, and the Gals of Baugo are hoping to reverse their only loss, that to Knox. “Claire (Carlson) was clutch in the rain,” related Jimmies head coach Jamie Kerrn. “And we were opportunistic in taking advantage of Glenn’s mistakes.” Falcons pitcher Emma Thomas hit two batters and walked one in Jimtown’s fourth-inning rally as it batted around-plus two. Carlson, Layla Winrott and Abby Williams had back-to-back singles to drive in all five runs. At the time the Jimmies had a slim 1-0 lead. The Falcons came back with a three-run spree in the next inning, taking advantage of a pair of walks off Carlson and hits by Taylor Jackson and Thomas (a double). But Carlson finished strong in the final two innings to secure the win, allowing just a single run in the seventh. The Jimmies now are 13-8 overall, while Glenn falls to 14-7. Jimtown won both ends of the home-and-home series with the Falcons. Score by innings: Glenn 000 030 1 4 5 2 Jimtown 001 502 X 8 5 2 Umpires: Roger Griffith and Anne Griffith (both of Goshen).
