Jimmies spanked by powerful Edwardsburg By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter EDWARDSBURG - Well, that wasn’t much fun. Last week swallowed by a whale (Concord), this week demolished by Goliath. Jimtown had no answers as it ventured into strange territory Friday night (9.4.26) and was thoroughly spanked by Edwardsburg’s Eddies, 55-12, in high school football. This the first time these schools have met on the gridiron since 1967, when the Jimmies came out on top, 6-0. This non-conference battle was staged before a large crowd with staggering humidity and the heat index at 100+. The Eddies (2-0) took on the role of Goliath, racking up nearly 500 yards in total offense and flexing their muscles to demonstrate their #10 rating in Michigan’s Division 4. The Jimmies (1-2) had only a few small pebbles in their sling bag with just over 200 yards. “It’s a new season,” said Baugo coach Cody Vincent. “The first three weeks have been unbelievably hard.” The Jimmies now begin prepping for work in the Indiana Northern Indiana Conference, beginning with a road game at John Glenn next Friday (9.11.26), 7 pm kick-off. Jimtown had no answer to Edwardsburg’s punishing ground attack. The Eddies rushed 44 times for 469 yards (unofficial stats), and wasted little time in getting started. They scored on their first possession on a forty-two yard run by the quarterback, senior Peter Szlanfucht with just 2:16 off the clock. Logan Kovach added the first of six point-after kicks. The Jimmies responded with a drive into Edwardsburg territory on an 11-yard pass from Cam Inbody to Zander Whitaker. But the push fizzled at the Eddies’ 35 when Jimtown gave up the ball on downs. E’burg then rattled off three more TDs to lead at the half, 28-0. Jimtown managed to dent the scoreboard to start the second half: An 80-yard drive featured a 14-yard gallop by Nate Guthrie and Inbody passes of 18 (to Murphy DiPiro) and 29 (to Tucker Sahlhoff). Guthrie took the ball in on a pitch to the left for the final three yards. (DiPiro’s PAT kick was tipped by the Eddies defense and fell short.) “I challenged them at the half,” Vincent reported. “I thought we were playing flat with no emotion. I saw them fight their butts off (in the second half) and not give up.” The other Jimmies’ score came on a pick-six by Sahlhoff. He returned the ball 65 yards for the TD, to reduce the Eddies’ lead to 41-12.
