Jimmies tennis squad downs Buchanan, 3-2 By Red Williams Freelance Sports Writer ELKHART – Buoyed by singles stalwarts Zane Wort and Dalton Cook, Jimtown’s tennis crew knocked off visiting Buchanan, 3-2, Monday afternoon (9/23/24) in an interstate game. It was “Seniors Night” for the Jimmies and lifts the season record to 13-2-1. The Bucks fall to 1-8-2. It was a chilly afternoon without a glimpse of the sun. Wort, playing in his senior season, nearly shutout the Bucks’ Dean Wegner, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. Coach Austen Schmidt cited Wort for his consistent play, including a strong forehand and good drop shot. Wort said, “My hard work in the off-season has helped my play this fall. I thought I played a pretty consistent game today.” Cook, a junior, equaled Wort’s effort, defeating Buchanan’s Marley Hinds, 6-0, 6-1. Schmidt called attention to Cook’s strong serve and quickness on the court. “I was able to get my shots in where I wanted,” Cook said. However, it was the No. 1 doubles team of Leighton Gingerich and Chase Clay who put the Jimmies over the edge on the scoreboard. They dominated the Bucks’ Jaret Seddon and Kaleb Lingle, 6-1, 6-4. A.J. Allen, another senior, fell in the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-3, in a pretty even contest. The Jimmies No. 2 doubles unit also dropped their match to Buchanan’s Ben Bosse and Devon Simpson, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 (10-5). The match was a tune-up for the first Indiana Northern State Conference meet, which will run two days at the Jimtown courts, Tuesday (9/24) and Thursday. In case of rain, the opening matches will be moved to Wednesday.
