Jimmies fall prey to ravenous Lions By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART – The Lions were definitely NOT sleeping Friday night (11.15.24) in high school girls basketball, the Bremen Lions, that is. They were growling, pouncing and chewing up the Jimtown Jimmies to the tune of 63-20 at Jerry Cook court. A 19-0 onslaught in the third period literally buried the Jimmy gals in their home opener before a good crowd. “I thought we started a little sluggish,” said Bremen Coach Alex Robinson. “Jimtown did a good job of backing in on us in the first half.” Bremen led, 28-11, at that point. “But we had better energy and were more active in the second half, creating some open spaces,” he remarked. Kila Foster, Bremen’s senior sharp shooter, led the hungry Lions with 23 points, including a pair of threes and 3-for-3 at the foul line. Teagan Feathers came off the bench to notch 12. “I was happy that they all made their contributions,” Robinson said. The Lions now are 3-1, including a 1-0 start in the inaugural season of the Indiana Northern State Conference. Jimtown falls to 1-4 (0-1). Jimmy Coach Shaunte Williams made no excuses, even though the Jimmies were short-handed with just one girl on the bench. One was out with an injury, she said, and two others were ill. “We expected as much from Bremen,” she said. “They are an excellent transitional team and very experienced. “I loved our fourth quarter,” she continued. Jimtown finished the game with six points in the final period, and could have had more, but missed all six free throws. They limited the Lions to 14. Lily Gaugler, one of three sophomores on the team, topped the Jimmies with 11, including a pair of treys. Others in the starting lineup were Brianna Curtis, Kamryn Williams, Kiera Jackson and Lily Steele. Brooklynn Buck was the sixth gal. Robinson said, “It’s tough to win at Jimtown. I have a lot of respect for Coach Williams and their program.” Another tough competitor lies waiting in the weeds for the Jimmies. They travel to Mishawaka next Tuesday (11.19.24) to take on the Cavemen in a 6:30 pm tip-off. Score By Quarters Bremen 14 14 21 14 – 63 Jimtown 5 6 3 6 – 20 Officials: Phil Tusch (Fort Wayne), George O’Brien (Fort Wayne), Joe Lortie (Avila).
