Stifling defense propels Jimmies to romp over Glenn By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter Elkhart – Anyone get the number of that runaway train? Jimtown High School’s men’s basketball squad leaped off to an 18-2 lead in the first quarter in easily dismantling visiting John Glenn, 56-16. The Jimmies are off to a 6-0 start, including 2-0 in the new Indiana Northern State Conference. Glenn is 1-4 overall. The early onslaught was highlighted by Branden King, the Jimmies 6-foot-7 senior. He stole a pass from the Falcons and went coast to coast for an easy basket. That put Jimtown ahead 12-2, and he later added four straight free throws. “We were well-prepared for their offense,” said Jimtown Coach Tyler Leighton. “We had a good game plan in stopping their offense, and this game helped us make progress on some specific goals.” Leighton also liked the way his crew communicated on the court. Glenn Coach John Dupont agreed: “They did a good job of playing together. It was impressive.” Jimtown led 30-8 at the half, and launched another blitz in the third period, 13-4, mostly on treys by King and Will Spurgeon. The Jimmies increased their lead to 47-16 at the end of three quarters. And believe it or not, Jimtown kept Glenn without a point in the final stanza. Leighton singled out Dylan Fey for his three-point shooting, netting four of 7 shots. He led the team with 19 points, King added 18 and Spurgeon finished with a dozen. “We’ve told Branden to play at his own pace. Stay under control,” Leighton said. “And Will was solid, taking care of the ball.” The Jimmies have no time to rest on their laurels, facing a tough contest Tuesday at home against neighborhood rival NorthWood.
