Another double-double by King not enough as Jimmies fall to Washington By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter SOUTH BEND – Sometimes the hole is too deep to find a way out. South Bend Washington’s superior speed and athleticism spurred the Panthers to a 14-point advantage after one quarter in high school men’s basketball Saturday night (1.25.25) against visiting Jimtown. Washington won the game, 82-58. Washington’s Steve Reynolds played like his hair was on fire, pouring in 33 points, along with 11 rebounds, to outshine Branden King’s 22/10 effort for the Jimmies. “They have elite team speed,” related Jimmy Head Coach Tyler Leighton. “We could not keep up with them in the transition game.” (Leighton offered his remarks by texting.) The Panthers leaped to a 24-10 lead in the first period, their highest output of the game, which was played in the Western Forum at Washington. The Panthers now are 11-2 for the season, and evens Jimtown’s mark to 7-7. The teams are former foes in the Northern Indiana Conference. One telling statistic was shooting: Washington connected with its field goals at 52.2 percent, including 37.5 at the three-point range. In a strange twist, Jimtown actually excelled the Panthers in three-point shooting with a 43.5 percentage, mostly buoyed by King’s 4-for-7 effort. “We need to improve our transition defense,” Leighton said, “as well as cutting off the driving lane, taking care of the ball and getting good shots.” Leighton told his crew they need to get back to drilling on the fundamentals. The Jimmies were troubled by 21 turnovers in the contest, as compared with 15 for Washington. Jimtown played Washington nearly even in the second half, its 36-point endeavor just two points shy of the Panthers’ 38. In addition to King’s 22-point effort, Ed Potter tossed in 11 for the Jimmies and Javen Jackson added 10. DaKori Parker contributed 14 points for the Panthers, and Kelin Webster had 11. The Jimmies hope to get back to their winning way with a visit to Elkhart Christian Academy tonight (1.28.25) at 7:30. Score by quarters: Jimtown 10 12 21 15 = 58 SB Wash 24 20 21 17 = 82
