Jimmies end 21-year drought By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART – Jimtown’s men’s basketball team overcame a shaky start to capture the Class 2A Sectional 34 title with a 54-40 victory over Bremen. It was the Jimmies first Sectional championship since 2004, the year they captured the state title in Class 2A. It all unfolded before a good crowd at Cook Court, home of the Jimmies. A three-point basket by Ed Potter in the second period “blew the lid off the can,” as Head Coach Tyler Leighton put it. “We struggled to make shots early,” he said. (Jimtown led just 6-4 after the first quarter and 18-13 at the half, then broke the game open with a 20-point outburst in the third.) A great defensive effort against Bremen’s Chase Devine, the Lions’ leading scorer, made the difference. He notched 21 points, but the Jimmies forced him into an 11-for-30 shooting night. The rest of the team scored a collective 19. Meanwhile the Jimmies had a balanced offensive attack, led by Javen Jackson with 17, Branden King with 13 (all in the second half) and Will Spurgeon and Dylan Fey with 10 apiece. Fey led the team with a dozen rebounds for a double-double. Jimtown will carry a 15-10 record into the Triton Regional next Saturday (3.15.25) against Westview. “Our rebounding effort was poor, but we did a good job of attacking the basket,” Leighton remarked. He said Westview is “tough with four double-figure scorers. They are well-coached and don’t turn the ball over. They have a tough defense and block out well.” The Warriors are 18-7.
