Varsity vs John Glenn High School Win Armstrong leads Jimmies over Glenn By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART – In the bygone golden days of radio many in our older generation thrilled to the exploits of “Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy.” Our dashing hero displayed courage and great logic in his daring escapades. Jimtown High School may have a reincarnation of that youthful hero in Mason Armstrong, senior pitcher for the Jimmies baseball squad. Mason threw a one-hit shutout and belted a three-run homer to lead the Jimmies past visiting John Glenn, 7-0, on Thursday (4.24.25). A fair crowd was on hand in the sweltering heat at Booster Field as the Jimmies ran their record to 6-2. And it was an important game in the Northern Indiana State Conference; the Jimmies are undefeated at 3-0. The Falcons are 3-7 and 1-2, and will battle the Jimmies again on Friday (4.25.25) on their home field. Armstrong (who also quarterbacked the Baugo football team), put Glenn up-and-down in order in the first inning. And the Jimmies erupted for four runs in their half against Falcon starter Brayden Benwell. Three of those came off the bat of Armstrong when he drove a hanging curve over the left field fence with a 1-and-2 count. “It was a high curve,” Armstrong said, “and I pretty much knew it was out of here.” Armstrong admitted his fast ball was not at full-steam, so mixed his pitches well in going the distance against Glenn. “I was able to put the pitch where I wanted it,” he said. “I located the ball well.” Brandon Squibb, head coach for the Jimmies, lauded Armstrong for his game, both on the mound and at the plate. “Couldn’t ask for much more than that,” he said. “I really liked his two-strike approach and the way he spotted his off-speed stuff.” He struck out eight and walked just one. Glenn coach John Nadalny (in his 21st year at the helm for the Falcons), said it’s time for his team to improve their hitting. “We can’t keep using the excuse that we’re young,” he remarked. “This was our 10th game, and we’ve been shut out three times. We’ve got to start growing up. I was disappointed with our intensity.” Nadalny applauded the Jimmies for their game: “They’re a veteran team and took advantage of everything we gave them.” That would include three errors, while the Boys of Baugo were error-free. Jimtown scored another run in the fourth inning, and tacked on two more in the sixth, both on a single by catcher Jackson Arbogast. Broderic Kaler and Ben McAllister led the Jimmies in hitting with two hits apiece. After Friday’s game at Glenn, Jimtown will entertain Elkhart on Saturday (4.26.25) with an 11 a.m. start. Score by innings: Glenn 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 – 0 1 3 Jimtown 4 0 0 1 0 2 X - 7 8 0 Umpires: Trent Beers, Aaron Koester.
