Jimmies outlast Bremen in “crazy” game By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART – Sometimes expectations can be skewed in a dozen different ways. Take Thursday afternoon’s high school battle between old rivals, Jimtown and Bremen. It was a scorekeeper’s nightmare: 25 total runs, 29 hits (most of them singles) and a dozen assorted malfunctions (hit-batsmen, errors, walks, stolen bases, eight different pitchers and extra-long innings). The Jimmies held on to defeat the Lions, 13-12, before a small but enthusiastic crowd at Jimtown’s Booster Field. It was a balmy afternoon (5.8.25) with game-temperature at 68 and a slight breeze blowing from right field. Most important, Jimtown lengthened its unbeaten string in the Indiana Northern State Conference to 7-0 (13-4 overall). “It’s not at all what we were expecting,” said Ryan Carpenter, Bremen’s fourth-year head coach. “I thought we’d have a low-scoring pitcher’s duel. What we saw was crazy.” He was even a bit surprised how Lion hitters struck quickly against Jimmy starter Mason Armstrong. The Lions put together four straight singles to the outfield to start the first inning. All but one of them came across the plate on a walk, a fielder’s choice and another single by Aiden Alvarado. Suddenly the Lions (10-6, 1-5) led 4-0. After retaliating with a run in the first (Connor Christman coming home on a wild pitch), the Jimmies exploded with a huge crooked number in the third to take a 10-5 lead. Christman and Broderick Kaler had singles to spark the onslaught, and Dalton Cook and Cole Dutton each doubled. Armstrong belted a deep sacrifice fly to left, Ben McAllister walked, Owen Biggs followed with a single to center and Nash Hamby was hit by a pitch. (BTW, Dutton had to leave the game with an injury to his elbow while pitching in the sixth and left the field with his arm in a sling.) Three more singles ensued by Christman, Ty Zartman and Cook. Thirteen men came to the plate before the dust settled. “We had plenty of confidence,” said Jimmy head coach Brandon Squibb. “We hit really well, and I think our base running was the big factor.” McAllister actually scored the winning run. Singles by Collin Davis and McAllister put two on in the sixth with the score tied at 11. Davis came home on another wild pitch and McAllister on an infield single by Christman (who went 5-for-5). The Jimmies will travel to Bremen on Saturday (5.10.25) for a rematch.
