Jimmies Fall Hard in Battle with Concord By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - The “B” boys had nearly everything their way in high school football Friday night here at Rice Field. Only this time “B” doesn’t represent “Baugo,” but a pair of dynamos from archrival Concord: Bo Brunner and Reese Breveard. Brunner was at the helm for the Minutemen and Breveard scored four touchdowns as Concord overwhelmed the Jimmies, 41-13. It was a cool evening in the mid-60s and cloudy overhead, but the flag hung limp. A good crowd of several hundred was on hand for the annual “Cableline” match. A non-partisan scribe might describe this game as a good ol’ thrashing behind the woodshed. “Concord’s defense had an answer to everything we tried,” explained Jimmy head coach Cody Vincent. “Reese was unbelievable, and Bo was unstoppable.” But he also had a word or two of congrats for his own squad: “We’re continuing to see them fight late into the game.” Minutemen coach Craig Koehler said, “We’ve got a pretty good team but we’ve gotta get better.” He complained of three red-zone turnovers. Concord is highly ranked in Indiana Class 4A, but Koehler said, “Sometimes these kids need to put on some earmuffs and pay no attention to what others are saying; they’re not good enough.” Koehler characterized Jimtown as “tough, hard-nosed. In reality, we both are dealing with the same thing: too many kids playing too many snaps.” Brunner , Concord’s senior quarterback, engineered a sleek 75-yard drive to draw first blood in the contest, taking just nine plays to cross the goal line at 6:29 in the first quarter. Breveard bolted thru the right side from two yards out for his first TD. Brunner hit two passes in the onslaught for 16 yards and ran the ball twice for another 25. Jimtown found little traction when it got the ball back, except for a 16-yard sprint by Owen Glass, who totaled 128 yards in the game on 28 carries. Concord forced the Jimmies to punt from their own 15, and Junior Casas uncorked a beautiful spiral 53-yarder that pinned the Minutemen at their own eight. It mattered little, as three plays later, Brunner connected with Mark Herman for a wide-open pass that went for an 81-yard TD. Nathan Potter then nailed the first of five straight extra-points for a 13-0 advantage. But the Jimmies retaliated with their own 78-yard drive to paydirt at the :53.2 clock in the first period when senior QB Cooper Dillenbeck sneaked in from the one. Glass highlighted the drive with a 63-yard jaunt to the Concord five with three Minutemen in pursuit. Jimtown’s second score came with 5:33 left in the third stanza when Cam Inbody hit Zander Whitaker with a lofty 19-yard pass. The 80-yard drive was highlighted by a 47-yard aerial from Inbody to Spencer Williams that took the ball to the CHS 14. Breveard finished with 167 rushing yards in 17 carries. He darted and dashed and frequently wriggled free from two or three tacklers. He also caught five passes for another 47 yards. Jimtown (0-2) awaits its first home game on Friday against Fairfield (the Baugo Lions Club also will feature its annual fist fry). The Falcons (1-1), under former JHS coach Corey Stoner, knocked off Glenn 38-20 on Friday. Concord (2-0) will travel to Mishawaka for its first foray in defending its Northern Lakes Conference title. The Cavemen (1-1) dropped a thriller to Penn, 28-22.
