Jimtown women anxious for new cager season By Red Williams Freelance Sportswriter ELKHART - “Optimistic,” “exciting” and “competitive” are three key ideas for Coach Shaunte Williams as she leads Jimtown’s women’s basketball squad into a new season. “We were basically a JV team playing a varsity schedule,” she related in reference to last year’s squad, which won just three games in 23 outings, including 0-5 in the Indiana Northern State Conference. Williams has seven returning lettermen from that team who will lead the current crew, along with some new faces. “Our three leaders have a high basketball IQ,” she said while being interviewed in her office. “They are verbal and doing a great job in mentoring the younger players. “We feel really good where we’re at,” she added. “Our veterans played a full year of varsity basketball. They know what to expect to compete at a higher level. We’re optimistic, confident and excited about this group. “We’ve had some great practices and are faster and better on the transition part of the game. And we’ve got more depth.” With regard to conference play, she expects Bremen and Tippecanoe Valley to be the top teams, “but I think we can compete with everyone in the conference,” she added. “I’m also excited with some of the non-conference matchups." The Jimmy gals have better length this season, as well, with 6-footer McKenzie Verhoeve, a sophomore, 5-foot-ll frosh Kayla Steele and 5-10 junior Lily Steele. The Girls of Baugo will start the season with a tough assignment, driving to Prairie Heights to battle the Cougars. Their home opener will be against Argos on Nov. 6 with a 7:30 tip-off.
